Chapter Ten

Wake me up when the ambulance arrives. I bet the medics allow me to ride up front this time.

"Bree, it's not a gas leak," I countered, waving toward Leo. "Leo, do your thing."

Do my thing? Seriously? Do I look like some slobbering pooch to you?

"Leo, she thinks we've been affected by some gas leak. We need to prove to her that we're telling her the truth. Disappear. This is taking way too long, and we need everyone on board if we're going to save Rye."

"And me," Oliver piped up from his place on the stool.

"Raven, listen to me," Bree said as she hastily brushed past Heidi. There was stark panic in her tone. "Hand me that phone right there. I can get us help."

"Leo, do as Raven says," Aunt Rowena instructed without batting an eyelash as she reached into the cabinet for three teacups. "I give you my word that I'll do what is necessary should it call for drastic measures."

Raven, did you hear that? The Wicked Witch of Windsor and I are bonding over my favorite spell. You should write this on the calendar somewhere, not that I'll remember it twenty-four hours from now. I can use it later for intellectual leverage, though.

Bree had been trying to reach around me for Heidi's phone, but I ended up grabbing her shoulders and turning her back around to face Leo. He was sitting in his cat bed, his bent tail hanging over the edge at an odd angle.

He blipped into thin air.

Bree's audible gasp could be heard over the cracking of eggshells. Oliver was certainly living the high life while waiting for us to fix his station in the afterlife.

"Oh, we're worse off than I thought," Bree whispered in horror, staring at Leo's empty cat bed. She was clutching my hand that I'd rested on her shoulder. "This is so bad."

"Leo, come back."

Leo materialized mid-yawn.

What? I missed both my morning and early afternoon naps, not to mention my catnip treats. I'm going to go through the withdraw symptoms any minute.

"Bree, we're telling you the truth."

"Rye," Bree exclaimed as she quickly walked over to where Oliver was pushing away another empty egg carton. "Rye, we need to go to the hospital. You need to help me convince everyone that these delusions are the result of that gas leak from last month."

"I don't know who you are, but do you think you can help swap my soul back? It really was wonderful to see my DeeDee after all these years."

"Souls." Bree had stated the word as if she was declaring war. She then began talking to herself. "Souls, as in what makes us...us. Oh, I get it. This makes total sense. Rye was the one who fixed the gas leak that I had at the bakery, so he breathed in most of the fumes. Clearly, my place of business wasn't the only one affected. Something must have happened to all the gas lines in Paramour Bay."

"I wouldn't know," Oliver said, turning on the stool until he was facing Bree.
